De-escalate the moment. Minimize what comes after.

ByStander brings live video, GPS, trusted contacts, and trained advocates into the minutes before a situation becomes a crisis, helping people slow down, communicate clearly, and reduce harm.

The opportunity

The biggest campus problems often begin as smaller moments.

Most tools are built for the emergency after the line has already been crossed. ByStander is built to add support earlier, while there is still time to change the outcome.

01

Something feels wrong

A student is walking from a late class, meeting someone new, or entering a situation that has not become an emergency, but does not feel safe.

02

Tension is rising

A disagreement, traffic stop, workplace interaction, or student encounter is becoming more emotional and less predictable by the second.

03

A routine breaks

A student misses a check-in, does not return when expected, or experiences a medical event before anyone nearby realizes something changed.

Our focus

Reduce uncertainty. Lower the temperature. Connect support. Minimize the impact.

The de-escalation pathway

The goal is not to document a disaster better. It is to help prevent the moment from becoming one.

A record still matters. But it works as the protective backstop behind an active safety response, not as a substitute for helping the person in the moment.

01

Recognize

The person acts while the situation is still manageable.

02

Connect

Trusted contacts and eligible advocates receive live context.

03

Stabilize

Calm guidance, visibility, and communication reduce uncertainty.

04

Preserve

If the moment still escalates, a secure event timeline already exists.

Role-neutral by design

One system. No preferred role.

Campus safety involves more than one kind of person and more than one kind of encounter. ByStander offers the same access to support, live context, and a secure timeline regardless of title.

One connected safety layer

Protection before, during, and after the moment.

Six features cover different kinds of risk without forcing every situation into the same emergency button.

01
Active support

Risky Situation

Opens live video, audio, and GPS when something does not feel right.

02
Guided de-escalation

Traffic Stop

Brings structure, visibility, and calm guidance into a roadside encounter.

03
Timed protection

Scout

Watches a walk, meetup, shift, or commute against an expected return time.

04
Scheduled protection

Checkpoint

Escalates a missed recurring check-in without waiting for the person to act.

05
Connected movement

Location Sharing

Keeps chosen contacts aware during travel, late walks, and off-campus activity.

06
Medical awareness

Founding campus partner

Help build the campus de-escalation model others will follow.

Start small, define success together, and produce real campus evidence before considering a broader rollout. Early partners receive direct access to the team building the product and a voice in what gets built next.

01

One population

Evening programs, commuters, athletics, one department, or a field-placement cohort.

02

One semester

Enough time to onboard, observe real use, measure response, and improve the operating model.

03

One cabinet-ready report

Agreed findings on adoption, early intervention, response, trust, privacy, and the next decision.

Talk to us

Thirty minutes. One focused conversation.

Tell us where situations are most likely to escalate and which population you are most concerned about. We will walk your safety, student-affairs, Title IX, and legal leaders through the product and pilot model.

  • One-population pilots before broader rollout
  • Success measures agreed before launch
  • Security and procurement documentation available
  • Campus chiefs invited to pressure-test the model

For campus decision-makers

Direct questions. Direct answers.

Is ByStander an emergency-dispatch replacement?+

No. ByStander is designed for the space before and around an emergency response. It helps people connect support, share live context, and de-escalate when possible. When immediate danger requires emergency services, the appropriate escalation path still applies.

Whose side is the product on?+

ByStander does not prefer students, employees, officers, or administrators. The same support and documentation model applies regardless of role. Its job is to reduce harm, preserve context, and let the appropriate campus or legal process determine what the event means.

How can an app actually help de-escalate a situation?+

Uncertainty accelerates conflict. ByStander adds calm human support, live visibility, location, trusted contacts, and a structured workflow. Those elements can slow decisions, reduce panic, improve communication, and make everyone more aware that the moment is being handled responsibly.

Will students use it before a situation becomes an emergency?+

That is a core pilot question. We recommend beginning with a population that has a repeated, recognizable need, such as evening students, commuters, athletics, or clinical placements, and measuring onboarding, activations, completed check-ins, early resolutions, and continued use.

How is student privacy protected?+

The campus model is voluntary and designed around data minimization, encrypted transport and storage, bounded retention, user-controlled disclosure, and no secondary advertising use. Exact access boundaries are documented before a pilot begins.

What does a founding-campus pilot require?+

We begin with one population, one semester, agreed success measures, and a defined end-of-pilot report. Pilot pricing is tailored to the cohort, and procurement materials, security questionnaires, and supporting governance documentation are available during scoping.
