Colleges & Universities — ByStander
★ For Colleges & Universities

Campus safety, finally rebuilt for real student life.

ByStander gives colleges and universities a real-time safety system designed for how students actually move — across campus, off campus, late at night, on study abroad, and through the moments that matter most. Live audio, video, and GPS to the people students already trust.

The campus safety gap

Why most campus safety stops at the property line.

The systems your campus has today were built for a campus — not for the way students actually live, study, and move around the world.

1

Blue lights only work where they exist

Emergency phones and campus dispatch radios stop at the parking-lot edge. Most reported student safety incidents happen at apartments, walking routes, and off-campus events — places your existing infrastructure can't reach.

2

Panic-button apps are just a panic button

The first generation of campus safety apps notify a dispatcher and stop. No live video, no continuous location, no trained advocate staying on the line, no support for students who'd rather not loop in police.

3

Title IX, mental health, and crisis response live in silos

Campus safety, the Title IX office, the counseling center, and student affairs each have their own intake. Students often don't know which door to knock on — and many never knock at all.

What ByStander brings to campus

Built for the way students actually live.

One platform that follows your students everywhere they go — with the response model your community trusts, not the one a vendor decides for you.

📍

Real-time GPS & live video

Trusted contacts and ByStander advocates see live location, audio, and video the second a student triggers an incident — not a stale ping after the fact.

📹

Cloud-recorded evidence

Every incident is recorded, encrypted, and time-stamped to the cloud. Recordings are retained for 90 days unless the student saves them. Memory shouldn't decide what happened.

👥

Trained advocates, on demand

Vetted advocates are matched during an incident based on the student's plan — peer-trained on standard plans, professionally trained on higher tiers. Students choose who they reach.

🌎

Coverage anywhere with signal

Off-campus housing, late-night walks, internships, study abroad, athletic travel. ByStander works wherever a student has cellular or Wi-Fi.

Pulse & CheckPoint timers

Pulse auto-triggers an incident if a student doesn't check in within a set window — perfect for late walks home. CheckPoint runs scheduled, recurring safety check-ins.

❤️

Wearable health alerts

Apple Watch and Samsung Health integration: fall detection, abnormal heart rate or blood-oxygen alerts can auto-trigger an incident before the student even reaches for the phone.

From freshman move-in
to commencement — and beyond.

ByStander supports every population your campus serves, in every situation that matters.

Designed to complement, not replace

An add-on layer for the systems you already run.

ByStander brings the live-response layer that blue-light phones, mass-notification systems, and dispatch radios were never built to provide — live audio, video, GPS, and a trained advocate on the line.

We don't replace your existing campus safety stack, and today we don't deeply integrate with it either. Most universities run us alongside what they have, while we keep building toward the deeper integrations on the right.

  • Live audio, video, and GPS from the moment an incident starts
  • Cloud recording with 90-day retention by default; encrypted in transit and at rest
  • Push and SMS alerts to a student's chosen contacts and advocates
  • Auto-trigger via Pulse and CheckPoint — missed check-in escalates without the student needing to act
  • Wearable detection — Apple Watch falls, abnormal vitals can launch an incident automatically

Campus integration roadmap

Active development. We're partnering with early universities to design these — if your team has specific needs, we'd love to build with you.

Pricing tailored to how your campus actually budgets.

We're early-stage and pricing is custom while we work with our first cohort of campus partners. Common structures we've discussed with universities:

  • Group licensing — per-seat institutional rate paid centrally, scaling with enrollment
  • Sponsored access — campus covers a subset (residential life, athletics, study-abroad cohort) as a pilot
  • White-label — your branding, your domain, your relationship with students (offered today through our partner program)
  • Funding paths we help campus partners explore — safety, wellness, or student-fee budgets; federal Title IX / VAWA / Clery grant programs (we assist with documentation, but we don't guarantee award qualification)
Schedule a campus walkthrough

Let's see if your campus is a fit.

Tell us about your university and the populations you're trying to protect. We'll set up a 30-minute walkthrough with your safety, Title IX, and student affairs leads — no commitment.

  • Most universities hear back within 3 business days
  • Pilots available for one department before full rollout
  • Demos can include your Title IX coordinator and CSO leadership
  • Procurement docs (MSAs, BAAs, security questionnaires) on request

Campus inquiry

Tell us about your institution. We'll be in touch within 3 business days.

By submitting, you consent to ByStander reaching out about a campus partnership. We never share or sell inquiry data.

For campus decision-makers

Questions we hear from universities.

How does ByStander pricing work for a campus today?
We're early-stage and pricing is custom while we work with our first cohort of campus partners. Today, campus engagements are quoted as group licenses (per-seat institutional rate), with sponsored-access pilots available for a subset of the campus population. As we scale, we'll publish standard rates. Talk to us for a quote or to discuss funding paths.
Will students actually use this?
Adoption is the make-or-break for any campus safety tool. We've designed ByStander so the app is genuinely useful in non-emergency moments — Pulse safety timers for late walks home and CheckPoint for routine, scheduled check-ins. Students who use it day-to-day are more likely to have it ready when something actually happens. Adoption strategy is something we work through with each campus partner during onboarding.
Does ByStander dispatch police to my students?
No. When a student triggers an incident, the people who respond are the ones the student chose — their pre-selected emergency contacts and a ByStander-trained advocate. The advocate is a non-police responder who can stay on the line, watch the live stream, and help the student decide what to do next. If the student needs 911, they can dial directly from inside the app, but ByStander itself does not call police on the student's behalf.
How is student privacy protected?
Live audio, video, and location streams are encrypted in transit and at rest. Incident recordings are auto-deleted after 90 days unless the student saves them. The student controls who's invited to view their stream — ByStander does not share recordings with administration without the student's consent. We don't sell student data, run ads, or use it for anything outside the safety service. Formal FERPA documentation, BAA support, and a SOC 2 audit are part of our enterprise readiness work; if your institution has specific compliance requirements, tell us early.
How does this fit with our Title IX office?
Today, students reach a ByStander-trained advocate during an incident — not the Title IX office directly. Dedicated Title IX-specific intake routing (with mandatory-reporter logic and consent-based survivor disclosure) is on our active roadmap and is one of the things we're co-designing with our first university partners. If your Title IX office has specific workflows, we'd like to design with you.
Will it replace our existing safety app or blue-light system?
No. ByStander adds a live-response layer that those systems weren't built to provide — live audio, video, GPS, and a trained advocate on the line. Blue-light phones, mass-notification systems (RAVE, AlertUS), and your dispatch app keep doing what they do. We don't deeply integrate with them today; deeper integrations (SSO, mass-notification handoff, dispatch webhooks) are on our roadmap.
What happens when students are off campus?
ByStander works anywhere a student has cellular or Wi-Fi — off-campus apartments, transit stops, parties, internships, parents' homes during break, summer travel, study abroad. Same advocates, same contacts, same response regardless of location. Off-campus coverage is one of the strongest practical reasons campuses adopt us — existing safety infrastructure typically stops at the property line.
Does it work internationally for study abroad?
The app works anywhere with cellular or Wi-Fi — live audio, video, GPS, and the in-app emergency-contact alerts function globally. SMS-based alerts depend on the local carrier's delivery to the contact's number. Our advocate network is currently focused on the United States; we're expanding international advocate capacity through 2026. Tell us where your students travel and we'll be specific about today's coverage.
Can we run a pilot before committing to the full campus?
Yes — we're actively partnering with universities as design partners. A pilot might focus on a single department or population (residential life, study-abroad cohort, athletic department) for a semester before broader rollout. We work alongside your team to design what success looks like and provide an end-of-pilot report.
What does procurement look like?
We're a young company. We support standard MSAs and basic security questionnaires today, and will work directly with your purchasing office. Formal SOC 2 Type II certification, full BAA capability, and listings on procurement co-ops (NASPO ValuePoint, OMNIA, Sourcewell) are in active development — if your procurement office has specific must-haves, tell us early so we can prioritize.
Can we white-label ByStander as our own campus app?
Yes — white-label deployment is offered through our partner program. The level of customization (icon, theme, splash, custom domains, branded admin and advocate portals) is scoped during a discovery call. Engineering work is required for full white-label, so it's typically suited for larger institutions; we'll walk through what's involved during a conversation.
